Bio:
As an aid worker in the fields of relief and development, Tori Hogan spent several years working throughout Africa and the Middle East, maintaining a particular focus on the education and protection needs of refugee children. However, her field experiences with a wide range of non-governmental organizations left her more jaded that inspired with the state of international aid. In response to her frustrations, Tori launched an innovative social enterprise called Beyond Good Intentions that uses media and education to stimulate a critical dialogue about what works in international aid. In 2006, Tori taught herself to be a filmmaker and embarked on a solo year-long round-the-world journey to ten countries to shoot a documentary film for her organization, highlighting the most innovative and effective aid projects worldwide. The film, with 193 hours of footage captured by Tori in South America, Asia, and Africa, is currently in the post-production phase with an anticipated broadcast release in the fall of 2008. In addition to a variety of film projects, Tori's organization is also actively engaged in educational programming designed to stimulate a dialogue about international aid among young people. Through workshops, university courses, and field-based internship programs, Beyond Good Intentions will be using media-based education to help transform the aid regime by stimulating greater innovation and accountability among the next generation of international aid workers and policy makers. Tori is a native of McLean, Virginia. She earned a self-designed B.A. with distinction in Global Health and Human Development from Duke University. In 2004, she was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to Egypt where she completed a Graduate Diploma in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies at the American University in Cairo. In 2007-2008 Tori served as a Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship at Harvard University where she recently received a Masters degree in International Education Policy.
