Transpartisan Grassroots Organizing
With Joseph McCormick and Amanda (Hydro) Roman, leadership team, Transpartisan Alliance
Since 2004 we have brought 145 national leaders representing over seventy million Americans into multi-day retreat dialogues in search of opportunities to collaborate (top leaders of MoveOn.org, Common Cause, Christian Coalition, American Legion, Meetup.com, Libertarian Party, and Green Party among others.) We are now working to leverage this web of informal relationships and the experience gained “engaging the other” to organize grassroots solution oriented house parties, library dialogues, town halls and citizen assemblies. Our goal is to a) catalyze a shift in the political culture from destructive polarization to a more respectful, responsible and cooperative search for solutions, and b) catalyze authentic citizen empowerment by creating transpartisan venues where ALL points of view are valued in the process of co-creating win-win policy options that 80% of people can say "Yes!" to. We will talk about the practical tools (called the “Transpartisan Toolbox”) of compassionate listening, managing triggers, the art of inquiry, speaking to be heard, and recognizing judgment we’ve used to build trust, respect, and cooperation between real progressives and conservatives (and those who identify as neither.)
Transition Towns and Resilient Cities
with Reinette Senum, Mayor, Nevada City, CA
As the current Nevada City Mayor I would like to share some of the transition initiatives that have been taking place in this small community in the foothills. As well as the pitfalls and challenges of leading a mostly white and conservative county into a transitioning, united community. I can share some of the firsthand stories of the clashes of old paradigm vs. new as well as how we are now drawing upon our rich farming history and historical legislation to usher in a broader coalition.
Nevada City is a rising model community because of such endeavors such as the Nevada City Farmers Market that showcases local, organic farms. As well as the Community Congress; an all day facilitation that set into rapid motion the creation of the APPLE Center for Sustainable Living in downtown Nevada City. I would like to share the most recent local policies: a city-wide, measurable sustainability plan that was unanimously approved by the Nevada City City Council. As well the creation of a facility to create a national campus of ingenuity known as the Cleantech Innovation Center and Energy University currently in the works in Nevada County.
The Power of Authentic Partnership
with Ocean Robbins, founder and co-director, YES!
“If you’ve come because you want to help me, you’re wasting your time. If you’ve come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” — Lila Watson, Aboriginal activist and educator
Many of us want to build real partnerships across historic divides like race, class, gender, power, religion, political perspective, and nationality, and challenge those attitudes and assumptions we all carry that keep us apart. What do we need to unlearn, in terms of our habits, assumptions, and behaviors? What stands in the way of our earning and extending trust, and how do we work through that to build alliances that sustain and matter? How do we create healthy organizational cultures, and build partnerships with diverse allies?
Ocean Robbins will share stories from his own learning journey around these questions, coming out of transformational partnerships with young leaders in more than 65 nations, and invite participants to reflect on and share their own experiences, creating a space of dialogue, learning and healing.
