Oakland Peace Center Launch - Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend!
As part of ringing in the New Year, the Oakland Peace Center is hoping to make its official 'launch' as a community gathering point for those committed to peace, justice and transformation in the Bay Area and beyond. The 'steering committee' which has been meeting for the last year or so came up with the idea of a series events on MLK weekend -- a combination of community-building, learning, art, launch, etc.
We would love for you to be a part of it!
Saturday, January 14 - from 10 am to 5 pm : “peacemaker” learning exchange
Three concurrent sessions where various groups can share their work and learn from one another: 10 am - 12 pm; 1-3 pm; 3-5 pm
Along with YES!, we anticipate that folks like Mind-Body Awareness Project, Attitudinal Healing, Niroga Institute, Non-Violent Communicators Network, Kingian Nonviolence, Challenge Day, Mosaic Project, Interplay, Faith Voices for the Common Good, Generation Waking Up / Thrive Hubs, and Fierce Allies will be a part of this learning exchange day, building our collective community of practice. We are also hoping the broader community, students, practitioners, etc. wll participate.
Lunch on this day would be a chance for mingling, connecting, deepening -- in a roundtable kind of format.
Sunday, January 15 - from 2 pm to 7 pm: OPC launch day
2-4 pm - 'Peacemaker Festival' -- tables set up in the large hall for people to share their work, their MLK day projects, and hook people into their programs for the year
2-4 pm - also a kids' program on peacebuilding with art activities and games
4-5:15 pm - a panel on 'what it will take to create peace in the bay area in 2012'
5:15 - 5:45 - launch of the Oakland Peace Center; ribbon-cutting and reception
5:45 - 7 pm - celebratory performances (music, drumming, spoken word)
Monday, January 16 - from 6 pm to 9 pm: community gathering and film festival
The morning will be a chance for people to plug into the numerous activities happening that day around the Bay Area.
You are invited to gather for a community potluck dinner and a screening of relevant and community-created short films.
