Arts for Social Change Jam Application

Because the people are the focus of the Jam, this questionnaire is longer and more in-depth than most, because we want to get to know you better. Please share as much as you feel comfortable sharing. There is no min/max length for responses and no pressure. We only ask you to share what you feel is 'enough'. We will follow up with more questions or a phone call if we need more information.

We do encourage you to take your time and share from the heart, as we use your responses not only to make an informed decision about selection, but also use them extensively to design the Jam itself.

Also, please note that all of your answers, including your name and basic info, will be kept in full confidentiality.* Only the organizing team will have access to your application. The more the team learns about you, the more informed their decision about selection can be and the better we can create a jam the reflects the needs of the participants.

* Please note that if you are selected, your name and bio will be shared on the YES! website and with the other participants of your Jam prior to the event. And, following the Jam, we will put this information up on our website so that you can participate in the alumni community, unless you request otherwise.

Who You Are

The people in the room are the focus of the Jam, and sharing our stories, experiences, ideas, etc., through different formats, is how we engage and learn together. The following series of questions is meant to be a taste of this principle. Don't worry about spelling or grammar or eloquent articulation. We just want to get a sense of who you are.

What’s does your current work (or play) look like in the world? Please be as specific as possible about what you do, why you do it, and the values behind it.

What are your creative skills, interests and passions?

Where are you in your journey as an artist-activist?

What are your burning questions right now, especially around the intersection of arts and activism for you?

How do you feel this gathering may be valuable for you at this point in your life/work journey? Why do you want to come to the Jam?

What do you hope to contribute to the Jam and the community that forms at the Jam? What do you hope to receive from the Jam?

Do you have any fears, doubts or concerns about attending the Jam? Is there anything else you'd like to tell us?:

Please give us a mini-bio (a paragraph version of your story) written in the third person (for example, using "she" instead of "I"). Talk yourself up! Include contributions you've made, any awards or accomplishments, organizations you've been involved with, etc.

This is the bio that will be shared with other participants of this Jam, and will be used for the YES! Website. (You can always modify it later.) :

Costs of Attending

Tuition for the Arts for Social Change Jam is $850, of which $425 covers food, lodging and local transport and $425 covers program costs (materials, childcare, stipends for organizers and facilitators). Are you or your organization in a position to pay the $850 tuition? We ask for people to contribute a minimum of $425, if possible. If not, how much are you able to contribute? Please consider your capacity to crowdfund, get partial support from your organizations, or other ways you might be able to raise the money for tuition.

Some partial work trades may be available. Are there other non-monetary ways that you might be in reciprocity with the Jam (any particular skills, other in-kind contributions, etc.)?:

We never want money to be a barrier in participating in a Jam, so we will do everything we can to make it work for you to attend.
Some partial scholarships may be available. We can also arrange a monthly payment plan for you, if that helps. Additional donations above the event price are welcome and help us provide scholarships to support the broad spectrum of participation on which this event thrives (they are also tax-deductible).

Travel expenses are the responsibility of the participant (the closest airports are San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland CA), but we will arrange carpools from the Bay Area and airports. If you are selected, we will follow up with you to ask about diet, housing, travel plans, etc. We want to be sure to meet your needs at the Jam.

Thanks for applying to the Arts for Social Change Jam!

We’ll be in touch as soon as we can.

Note: We encourage you to cut-and-paste your answers to this application into a word doc, BEFORE you hit the submit button, as we are occasionally experiencing some technical difficulties with this contact form.  Once you have received confirmation from us that we received your application, then you can go ahead and delete the word doc. Thank you!
